Crouton Alternative: Options Beyond Apple Only

Crouton is Apple-only. That is the reason most people look for an alternative: one Android phone or one Windows laptop in the household and the app is out. Crouton Plus is a fair $24.99 one-time purchase, but Discover is billed separately at $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year, which surprises people who assumed Plus covered everything.

A disclosure: we make Gratly, one of the options below. Crouton is a better-looking, better-built app than ours on Apple hardware, and that is said up front.

Prices verified from App Store listings, last checked 19 October 2026. Crouton's free tier limit is reported inconsistently across sources, so the honest answer is below rather than a confident wrong number.

Why people look for an alternative

Platform. iOS, iPadOS, macOS and watchOS only. No Android, no Windows, no web app. If your partner is on Android, a shared family cookbook is simply not possible.

The two-purchase structure. Plus at $24.99 once is good value. Then Discover, the recipe discovery feature, is its own subscription. Two payments for one app reads as nickel-and-diming even when each price is reasonable.

The free tier is unclear. Sources variously report 2 imports, 5 recipes, or 20 recipes. We are not going to pick one and state it as fact. Check the current App Store listing. What is consistent is that free is a look around, not a usable tier.

No web access. Recipes live in the app and sync through iCloud. There is no browser view, so a recipe on a work laptop is out of reach.

Where Crouton genuinely wins

It is a beautifully made Apple app. Native, fast, properly integrated with the platform, and the cook mode is among the best in the category. Hands-free step navigation and an Apple Watch companion are features nothing on this page matches.

One-time pricing for the core app. $24.99 once for Plus is better long-run value than any subscription here, including ours, if you stay on Apple hardware.

iCloud sync with no vendor account. Your recipes go through your own iCloud rather than a company's server. For the privacy-minded, this is a genuine advantage.

If you are all-Apple and Discover does not interest you, Crouton is probably the right app and you do not need an alternative.

The honest alternatives

Paprika, if you need Windows too

The closest match in philosophy: one-time purchase, no account, works offline, recipes on your own device. It adds Windows, which is the gap Crouton cannot fill.

The catch is that it charges per platform: $4.99 iOS, $29.99 Mac, $29.99 Windows. A phone and a Windows laptop is about $35, and a phone plus Mac plus Windows is nearly $65. There is no free tier on iOS; desktop trials hold 50 recipes with no cloud sync. See Paprika alternatives.

Gratly, if the household is mixed

Ours, and the specific case for it is cross-platform rather than quality. A Chrome, Edge and Brave extension plus a web app, so an Android phone, a Windows laptop and a Mac all open the same collection. Sync is free, not a per-platform purchase.

Free holds 10 active recipes with cook mode, step timers, serving scaling, unit switching, printing, this week's meal plan, shopping lists and export to JSON or CSV. Lifetime is $99 once, which is more than Crouton Plus, so this is not a value argument. It is a reach argument.

Where it loses to Crouton: no native app at all, no mobile app yet, no Apple Watch, and a cook mode that is good rather than excellent. On Apple hardware specifically, Crouton is the better experience.

Mela, if you want Apple-only but cheaper

The obvious sideways move, and a common comparison. Also Apple-only, also iCloud, also one-time, but cheaper: Mela+ is $6.99 on iOS and $14.99 on macOS, about $22 for both against Crouton's $24.99. Mela's reader view is excellent and version 2.5 imports from video descriptions.

If you are choosing between these two specifically, we wrote it up: Crouton vs Mela. See also Mela alternatives.

RecipeSage, if free matters most

Unlimited recipes, free planner, free shopping list, open source, runs anywhere with a browser, self-hostable. The cheapest way out of an Apple-only tool.

The trade: hosted imports cap at 2 import jobs and 7 URL autofills per day for non-contributors, and it is nowhere near as pleasant to cook from as Crouton. See RecipeSage vs Gratly.

How to choose

FAQ

Is Crouton free? There is a free tier, but reported limits differ between sources, variously 2 imports, 5 recipes or 20 recipes. Check the current App Store listing. Crouton Plus is a one-time $24.99 purchase, and Discover is a separate subscription at $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year.

Is Crouton available on Android or Windows? No. Crouton is Apple-only: iOS, iPadOS, macOS and watchOS. For Android or Windows you need a different tool, such as Paprika for Windows or Gratly and RecipeSage for anything with a browser.

Does Crouton Plus include Discover? No, and this is the most common surprise. Plus is the one-time app purchase; Discover is billed separately each month or year.

What is the cheapest Crouton alternative? RecipeSage, which is free. Among paid options, Mela is cheaper at roughly $22 across iOS and macOS, against $24.99 for Crouton Plus.

Crouton or Mela, which is better? Crouton has the stronger cook mode and an Apple Watch app. Mela has the better reader view and costs less. Both are Apple-only one-time purchases that sync via iCloud. We compared them directly in Crouton vs Mela.

Can I use Crouton recipes on a web browser? No. There is no web app, and recipes sync through iCloud into the apps. If browser access matters, Gratly or RecipeSage are the alternatives.

If your household is mixed

The one problem no Apple-only app can solve is a second platform. Add Gratly to Chrome for free and clip a recipe to see whether a browser-based collection works for your kitchen.
