Recipe Keeper vs Paprika: Which One-Time Buy Wins

Paprika is the better app; Recipe Keeper is the only one of the two on Android. Paprika costs roughly $35 for a phone and a laptop against Recipe Keeper's $50, syncs more reliably, and has a longer track record. Recipe Keeper has a free tier of about 20 recipes and runs on Android, which Paprika does not.

Both charge once per platform rather than monthly, which is why they end up compared against each other so often.

A disclosure: we make Gratly, mentioned at the end as a third option. It is a subscription or a $99 one-time, so it undercuts neither on price.

Paprika is dramatically cheaper on the phone, $4.99 against about $19.99, and cheaper overall for a phone plus desktop setup. Recipe Keeper's per-platform cost is the single most common complaint in its Play Store reviews, and the numbers show why.

Neither is a subscription. Over three years either beats a $49-a-year planner comfortably.

Where Paprika wins

Price, clearly. About $35 for a phone and a laptop against roughly $50. On the phone alone the gap is four times over.

Sync. Paprika's cloud sync between purchased platforms is dependable and has been for years. Recipe Keeper's free tier has no sync at all, and sync is the feature people most often report friction with.

Track record and import quality. Paprika has been the default recommendation in this category for more than a decade. Its import engine has seen more recipe sites than almost anything else, which shows on awkwardly built pages.

A genuinely useful desktop trial. Fifty recipes with no time limit on Mac or Windows is enough to evaluate properly, even without sync.

No account required and fully offline. Recipes live on your device. Nothing is held by a company server.

Where Recipe Keeper wins

Android. Paprika does not exist there. If an Android phone is in the household, this is the end of the argument, exactly as Windows ends the Mela comparison.

It has a real free tier. Roughly 20 recipes, unofficially reported, against nothing at all on Paprika for iOS. If you want to live with an app before paying, Recipe Keeper lets you and Paprika does not.

Four platforms. Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Paprika covers three and skips the biggest phone platform by volume.

It is tidy and durable. No AI, no social import, no subscription, no upsell. A recipe box that will still work the same way in five years.

What they share

Per-platform pricing. Neither sells one purchase covering everything, and both costs add up faster than the store page suggests. Count your devices first.

No web app. Neither has a browser view. A recipe on a work laptop or a borrowed computer is out of reach, and in mixed households this is often the deciding flaw rather than any feature.

No AI or social video import. Both are storage-and-organisation tools. If your recipes arrive as Instagram Reels, neither is built for that. See how to save recipes from Instagram.

Sync is tied to the purchase. Adding a device means buying that platform.

How to choose

The third option, if the browser gap matters

Ours, briefly. If the thing stopping you is that neither app has a web view and only one covers Android, Gratly is a Chrome, Edge and Brave extension plus a web app, so an Android phone, a Windows laptop and a Mac all reach the same collection, with sync free rather than bought per platform.

Free holds 10 active recipes, which is fewer than Recipe Keeper's 20, with cook mode and step timers, serving scaling, unit switching, printing, this week's meal plan, shopping lists and export to JSON or CSV. Lifetime is $99 once, more than either app here.

Where it loses to both: no native app and no mobile app yet, a smaller free tier than Recipe Keeper, and no offline-first local storage. If one-time pricing on native apps is what you want, buy Paprika.

FAQ

Recipe Keeper or Paprika, which is better? Paprika, for most people. It costs less overall, roughly $35 against $50 for a phone and a desktop, syncs more reliably, and has a longer track record. Recipe Keeper wins if you need Android, which Paprika does not support, or if you want a free tier.

Which is cheaper? Paprika. It is $4.99 on iOS against roughly $19.99 for Recipe Keeper, and about $35 against $50 for a phone plus desktop setup.

Does Paprika work on Android? No. Paprika covers iOS, macOS and Windows. Recipe Keeper covers those three plus Android, which is its main advantage.

Does Recipe Keeper have a free version? Yes, holding roughly 20 recipes, though the figure is unofficial. Importantly, the free tier does not include sync across devices. Paprika has no free tier on iOS at all.

Are these subscriptions? No. Both are one-time purchases charged separately for each platform, which is the main reason people compare them against subscription apps.

Do either sync for free? Recipe Keeper does not sync on its free tier. Paprika syncs between platforms you have purchased. In both cases sync effectively requires paying for each device's platform.

Can I read recipes in a browser with either? No. Neither has a web app. That shared limitation is the usual reason people end up choosing a browser-based tool instead.

If you need it everywhere

The gap both apps share is the browser, and only one covers Android. Add Gratly to Chrome for free and clip a recipe to see whether a browser-based collection suits your kitchen.
